FLHSMV states that new residents must title and register vehicles within 10 days after beginning employment, placing children in public school, or otherwise establishing Florida residency. Review the agency’s current wording for your situation.

Plan early

Financed, leased, jointly owned, imported, or document-deficient vehicles may require extra coordination. Start with the title status and lienholder or leasing company before booking the transaction.

A practical sequence

1. Confirm Florida insurance meeting current state requirements and ensure the vehicle identification number is correct.
2. Locate the original title or coordinate title information with the lienholder or lessor.
3. Review FLHSMV forms and determine who may complete the required VIN verification.
4. Gather identification, proof of ownership, odometer information when applicable, insurance proof, and payment.
5. Confirm the county tax collector or license-plate agency location, appointment process, accepted payment, and exact services.

At and after the office
