Use this as a decision framework. Dates, providers, school assignments, insurance, and property requirements vary by address, household, and county.
Before committing to an address
- Test work, school, healthcare, airport, and caregiving routes when you will actually travel.
- Confirm flood and evacuation zones, insurance availability, HOA or district obligations, and property restrictions.
- Verify school assignments directly with the district.
- Identify the electric, water, wastewater, waste, internet, and gas providers serving the exact address.
- Budget for deposits, travel, temporary lodging, tolls, insurance changes, and Florida vehicle costs.
About one month out
- Create one secure folder for identification, housing, insurance, vehicle, medical, school, pet, and moving records.
- Schedule utility starts with overlap where practical.
- Arrange movers, document inventories, and photograph valuable items.
- Transfer prescriptions and confirm healthcare continuity.
- Use official portals for government address changes.
Moving week
- Keep identification, medications, keys, essential clothing, records, and valuables with you.
- Record meter readings and property condition.
- Confirm delivery windows, parking, gate, elevator, and contact instructions.
- Pack first-night supplies and basic storm-ready essentials separately.
During the first days
- Test alarms, shutoffs, breakers, locks, cooling, and emergency access.
- Confirm mail, waste, internet, utilities, and delivery access.
- Complete Florida identification and vehicle tasks within applicable timeframes.
- Locate urgent care, a hospital, pharmacy, groceries, fuel or charging, and evacuation routes.
